Henry Mellish School & Sports College is at a very exciting time in its development. School staff, our students, their parents, our Governing Body, and our partners in the Local Education Authority and the Education Action Zone, are working together to provide a first class education for our young people.
Teaching groups are established based on achievement, so that in each year group a range of subjects can be offered that reflects their ability, helping each student to achieve their full potential in each aspect of school life.
All students have individual performance and attendance targets and are regularly assessed against these targets with action plans established to support students where targets are not met. Parents are informed of their child's targets at the beginning of each academic year, and are provided with regular progress reports so that they can support their child.
We have a high quality teaching staff who received excellent reports from Her Majesty's Inspectors during the last visit. A suite of ICT rooms has been recently established providing specialist facilities for our students.
A new sports hall was opened in April 2005 providing leisure and fitness facilities for our students during the day and the local community in the evening. Our dining room has been fully refurbished with 'McDonalds' like seating. Our students deserve the best facilities… and we are determined that they will get them.
Whilst 'success for all' emphasises good quality teaching, enhancing student achievement, supported by excellent attendance, in a positive, well-resourced learning environment, we place great emphasis on our wider responsibilities for the welfare of each individual child in order to help them learn. We have good working relationships with the Education Welfare Service and the Multi-Agency Support Team both of which have a major impact on the success of the school.
'Success for all' insists on the best behaviour of all our young people. We have a range of behaviour management strategies in place at Henry Mellish to encourage and reward good behaviour, and to support those students who have difficulties coming to terms with the high expectations we have of them. Our dedicated team of teachers working in our Learning Support Unit have the responsibility of working with individual students whose behaviour is affecting their own learning and that of other members of their class. All students have the right to learn. All teachers have the right to teach. All parents have the right to the best education for their children.
At Henry Mellish School our aim is to ensure that we all achieve our very best. We hope that you will take an opportunity to see the school and we look forward to welcoming you as a partner in the rapidly developing Henry Mellish School.
